How to Stop Koi Jumping Out of Your Pond
Koi are powerful, active fish — and jumping is a natural behaviour. Unfortunately, a single jump at the wrong time can mean losing a prized fish. Here's why it happens and what you can do about it.
Why Do Koi Jump?
- Water quality issues — high ammonia, nitrite, or low oxygen levels
- Parasites — irritation from flukes or other parasites
- Breeding behaviour — males chasing females during spawning
- Predator avoidance — herons or cats spooking the fish
- Natural curiosity — some koi simply jump, especially new additions
Common Solutions
Netting — effective but unsightly. Nets catch debris and detract from the pond's appearance.
Raised edges — can help but aren't always practical, especially for formal ponds.
Glass barriers — the premium solution. Toughened glass panels with stainless steel posts provide a clear, unobstructed view while creating a reliable barrier.
The Koi Jump Guard Solution
Our system uses 316 stainless steel posts with toughened safety glass panels. Posts are spaced at 1500mm centres and available with flat, semi-domed, or multi-grooved end caps. The result is a clean, modern barrier that protects your fish and looks great.
