Questions / Guard Height
How High Should a Koi Jump Guard Be?
Our standard post height is 265mm above the fixing surface, with 245mm tall glass panels, as our standard low-profile configuration. Getting the height right is essential. Too low and koi can still clear the barrier during spawning or panic. Too high and the system becomes visually intrusive. Here's what works for most koi ponds.
Why koi jump from ponds
Koi jump for several reasons — poor water quality, spawning behaviour, predator panic, and sudden disturbances. During spawning season, males chase females at high speed near the surface, and fish can launch themselves well above the water line. Understanding the triggers helps you appreciate why a physical barrier can help reduce risk alongside addressing the cause of jumping. Our guide on why koi jump out of ponds covers the causes in detail.
Recommended guard height for koi ponds
Our standard finished post height is 265mm, with estimated 245mm glass. No height guarantees against every jump or predator; effectiveness depends on height, water level, gaps and layout. Heights above 350mm need bespoke review.
Typical glass panel height
Our standard posts have a finished height of 265mm, with estimated 245mm glass fitted in clamps. Andy confirms final glass sizes and specification before manufacture. Glass can break; no impact-proof guarantee is claimed.
How height affects heron protection
Pond guards help reduce jumping risk and may make access from pond edges harder for herons, but birds may still reach fish. Height, water level, gaps and layout all matter. Read more in our guide on how to stop herons eating your koi.
