Questions / Post Distance
How Far Apart Should Pond Guard Posts Be?
Posts go 1500mm apart centre to centre as standard, with wider spacing available where a pond feature such as an infinity window gets in the way. The distance between pond guard posts is one of the most important decisions when planning your system. It affects glass panel size, structural strength, and overall cost.
Typical post spacing used in pond guards
Most pond guard installations use a post spacing of approximately 1500 mm (1.5 metres). This is the designer default, not a certified safety rating. Actual panel width, height, glass specification and fitting surface determine suitability.
Why spacing affects glass panel strength
The wider the gap between posts, the larger the unsupported span of glass. A larger panel flexes more under impact and is more susceptible to wind loading. Conversely, smaller panels are stronger per unit area. For pond guards using 10 mm toughened safety glass, the 1500 mm spacing provides an excellent strength-to-width ratio.
Recommended spacing of around 1500 mm
We recommend 1500 mm as the standard spacing for most installations. This produces glass panels that are easy to handle, install, and replace if ever needed. The Pond Guard Designer tool automatically calculates post positions based on your pond dimensions, distributing posts evenly to maintain consistent spacing around the entire perimeter.
Wider spacing for windows and obstacles
In certain situations — such as creating a wider viewing window or accommodating an awkward pond edge — spacing can be increased beyond 1500 mm. For panels over 2200 mm we recommend considering 12 mm glass; the right glass and fixing depend on the installation, and final measurements are always confirmed. Our installation guide explains how to plan post positions for non-standard layouts.
