Questions / Post Spacing
What Spacing Should Pond Guard Posts Be?
Standard spacing is 1500mm centre to centre. Wider spacing can be chosen where you need to clear a feature such as an infinity window; above 2200mm we recommend considering 12mm glass, and final suitability depends on the installation. Post spacing determines the size of each glass panel and the overall strength of your pond guard system. Spacing helps balance panel size, appearance and cost; it does not guarantee protection.
Why post spacing matters
The distance between posts directly affects the width of each glass panel. Wider spacing means larger panels, which increases the stress on the glass if a koi strikes it at speed. Narrower spacing produces smaller, stronger panels but requires more posts. The goal is to find the right balance between structural strength, visual appearance, and cost.
Recommended spacing for most ponds
For most koi ponds, a post spacing of approximately 1500 mm (1.5 metres) between posts is recommended. This spacing provides strong, manageable glass panels that are easy to handle during installation and offer excellent impact resistance. The Pond Guard Designer automatically calculates optimal post positions based on your pond dimensions.
Standard spacing of 1500 mm between posts
The designer defaults to 1500mm centre-to-centre spacing. Suitability depends on actual panel size, height, glass specification and fixing surface. Glass is heavy and needs suitable handling; no single-person installation or impact-proof guarantee is claimed.
When wider spacing may be needed
In some cases, wider spacing may be appropriate — for example, if a section of the pond edge needs to remain open for maintenance access or if a viewing window is required. Wider spacing is possible, and for panels over 2200 mm we recommend considering 12 mm glass. Our installation guide covers these options in detail.
