Questions / Post Spacing
How Far Apart Should Pond Guard Posts Be?
Correct post spacing is one of the most important factors when designing a pond guard system. Getting the distance right ensures there are no unsafe gaps around the pond perimeter, while keeping the number of posts — and overall cost — as low as possible.
Recommended Pond Guard Post Spacing
Most pond guard systems use a standard spacing of approximately 1500 mm (1.5 metres) between posts. This is the designer default, rather than a guaranteed safety rating. Actual panel widths, height, water level, gaps and layout all matter. The Pond Guard Designer automatically calculates optimal post positions based on your pond dimensions.
When Wider Spacing Is Used
In certain situations the spacing between posts can be increased beyond 1500 mm. For panels over 2200 mm we recommend considering 12 mm glass. This is typically necessary where windows, pipe runs, or other obstructions along the pond edge make standard spacing impractical. Wider spacing is best kept for these special cases, as larger unsupported glass panels are subject to greater wind loading and impact stress. Our installation guide explains how to plan for non-standard layouts.
Typical Pond Layout Example
The diagram below shows a rectangular pond with corner posts at each turn and mid posts spaced evenly along each side. This is the most common layout for raised and semi-raised koi ponds.
Why Post Spacing Matters
The distance between posts affects three key factors:
- Safety — narrower spacing reduces the unsupported width of each glass panel, but impact resistance and protection depend on the full installation; no guarantee is claimed.
- Structural stability — correctly spaced posts distribute wind and impact loads evenly across the system, reducing stress on individual panels and fixings.
- Cost — wider spacing reduces the total number of posts required, lowering material and installation costs. The 1500 mm standard strikes the optimum balance.
